DAY ONE

Inlight Institute’s mission, vision, and goals are in response to the Sandy Hook, Parkland, and Las Vegas shootings. Founding members were hit with a catalyst moment, driven to target the human-side of violence through preventative care and student-centered interventions.

STARTING POINT

In 2018, Courtney and Jen met to discuss action ideas. Feeling paralyzed, they talked at school pickups with other parents. These discussions led to a deeper conversation with founding member Alison who introduced them to Sandy Hook Promise, a 501(c)3. This conversation led to a six month advocacy campaign to move their programs into San Diego County to reach 42 school districts and nearly 500,000 students across its 780 schools. Email outreach, phone calls, in-person meetings, petitions, and roundtables proved successful as San Diego County of Education, the presiding District Attorney, principals, and superintendents came together to champion new safety protocols to train staff and students on how to spot warning signs. In January 2024, the Say Something program thwarted a plot on Rancho Bernardo High School.

During our organization’s formation years, we met Dr. Reid Meloy who spoke about the importance of intervention strategies in early childhood development.

Our History

Young people often experience multiple traumas which can put youth on a behavioral trajectory toward self-harm (cutting, eating disorders, addiction, truancy, suicide) or peer violence (bullying, harassment, fighting, terrorism, acts of extreme violence).

STARTLING TRENDS

It became evident from research, trends, and expert testimonials that youth require a system to learn the key skills to handle their mental health and gain the skills and confidence to succeed into adulthood. Early intervention is key for preventing emerging symptoms from turning into crises. While there are many programs targeting risk factors, there are global issues that prohibit progress and slow outcomes from reversing negative trends. The escalation of loneliness to an epidemic, nihilism, and rapid generational norms driven by social media remain the key drivers to the problem.

PARENTING GEN ALPHA

As moms and dads, we know intimately how young people mature seemingly overnight. We also know from research that 50% of mental health disorders develop by age 14.

Childhood is precious and the child's mind is impressionable. We have worked tirelessly to architect, pilot, and implement adaptive solutions that focus on promoting positive protective factors to prevent downstream mental health risks.

As business leaders and educators, we acknowledge the evolving landscape of global economies and the pressing need for education systems to adapt to technological advancements. By prioritizing the development of critical skills like critical thinking and communication, they aim to prepare youth for the rapidly changing workforce.

FOREVER YOUNG

At the heart of our work is to keep the programs kid-centric. It is us who learn from the next generation, and not the other way around. We hope this way our systems stay fresh, authentic, and relevant. Above all else, we hope that interaction with our program saves a child from harm and leaves them with a positive memory from childhood that guides them to contribute to their communities with care. We are guided by the belief that philanthropy plays a crucial role in supporting initiatives that governments and businesses may overlook. Youthful, modern advocates are agents of positive change.
